Following months of planning a meeting was held on January 1, 1972 to announce the formation of Northeast Guilford Volunteer Fire Department. Concerned members of our community were willing to contribute their own money to purchase gear and equipment to protect their neighbors. Volunteers from a 64.5 square mile area recruited to serve and protect what is to date the largest fire district in Guilford County. After the voters in our area passed the “fire protection levy” the first of three stations, station 32 was completed in August of 1973. Station 33 followed in 1975 and station 34 in 1979 both of which are still in their original locations. Station 32 moved into its current location in 2001.
After petitioning the county, and providing funds donated from the community, Medic 5 was placed in service at station 32 in April of 1987. Having a Paramedic stationed in our community provided our residences with a much greater chance of survival during true life threatening emergencies. Medic 5 continues to serve our area at the new station 32 location.
Northeast has long served as a cornerstone of our community. The department was formed and built by the men and women of the area and continues to have great community support even though our district is growing and changing. Our department has hosted many fundraisers throughout the years that seem to become a community event more than a fundraiser. The family atmosphere we try to maintain has carried on with second and third generation firefighters still serving the community in which they were born and raised.
